| What is a laser?
A
laser is a device that generates an intense beam of
light at a specific wavelength.
How does a laser work?
The way a laser works is determined by the particular
wavelength of light that it produces. For example,
the carbon dioxide laser- the most commonly used
surgical laser in the world- produces an invisible
infrared bean light. The wavelength of the carbon
dioxide laser beam is selectively absorbed into the
water found in skin and other soft tissue, vaporizing
the cells. However, the surgeon can control the extent
to which the wavelength is absorbed into surrounding
tissue, allowing extreme surgical precision. Lasers with
different wavelengths are used for different surgical
procedures, such as incisions and coagulation.
Why Laser Surgery?
|
LESS PAIN:
The
laser seals nerve endings as it
"cuts." As a result, your pet
will experience less pain and be
more comfortable post
operatively.
LESS BLEEDING:
The laser seals small blood
vessels during surgery, which
allows your doctor to perform
surgeries with extraordinary
precision. This also speeds some
procedures reducing the amount
of anesthesia required. A laser
is ideal for a wide variety of
surgical procedures for dogs,
cats, horses and exotics. Laser
surgery can correct many common
conditions such as cysts,
tumors, warts, and special
procedures around the eyes, ears
and mouth. De-clawing cats with
a laser drastically decreases
post-operative discomfort
allowing normal function much
sooner. Specialized internal
procedures are also possible
with a laser.
LESS SWELLING:
Laser energy does not crush,
tear or bruise tissue because
the only thing that touches your
pet is an invisible beam of
light |
